CANVAS (formerly known as “GWS” or Global Website Solutions) is a website platform enabling brands to create premium digital experiences for our consumers faster than ever, and with access to today’s best in class user experience, features and toolsets.
The name suggests a space for creation, and CANVAS allows brands to realize their unique brand vision on a foundation which grows and scales as the digital world evolves.
CANVAS provides a starting place for your brand to leverage robust built-in features and responsive page layouts with little to no effort required. With CANVAS, you know that the items you select have Analytics, SEO, and User Experience (UX) best practices included!
When you navigate to the Templates section, you’ll see that each sub-section gives you the opportunity to download. You can download PDFs, PSDs, and PSBs individually or all at once. The PDFs are great references for all stakeholders to understand what is available in a template. The PSDs and PSBs are for creative designers.
“Out of the Box” refers to everything CANVAS has to offer that doesn’t require any custom development work to accomplish. In other words, it’s our default experience. Customization can be anything else you’d like to add on top of that. Keep in mind, the more customization, the more investment the brand will need to make towards creation of the site and potentially in maintenance. Each region has product and engineering team consultation to help navigate customization decisions.
Visit the Templates section to learn more about when and how to use different page layouts available in CANVAS. We’ve also created a Demo section to illustrate with examples what specific content should go where.
Most of your team members would agree that without a Creative Project Brief, you’d have little to no foundation for a project. This document outlines the entire scope of work as well as all resources involved and also acts as the starting point for most CANVAS projects.
CANVAS design template PSDs are built with hi-retina display in mind. Since the CANVAS sites are responsive and more and more devices have retina displays, this allows for the images to maintain their highest quality when displaying at any size.
Absolutely! CANVAS by default allows you to set a background color or image for your site. You can also extend what is available by default to create the right background styling to match your brand! To learn more, visit our Design Style Guide section.
CANVAS uses Arial as the default font and supports all web-fonts. Visit our Design Style Guide section to learn more. Currently, there is no font library built into CANVAS. Font licensing, if applicable, will need to be handled by each individual project team.
Videos can be placed in-line using an embedded YouTube or Brightcove player on your site’s product detail pages and article detail pages. You can also take advantage of our Video Detail Page template to provide each piece of content with its own unique page and organize your video content into categories for a gallery display. Videos can also be showcased in carousels, or, with some customization, in touts.
Taxonomy has been defined at the CANVAS platform level. Brands are able to define the terms within the established taxonomies for their individual site. Taxonomies help drive filtering on pages such as the product listing pages and search result pages. Taxonomies as well as the taxonomy values can be named per the brand’s need. For more information visit our section on Information Architecture (hyperlink). If you feel your brand requires a need for new taxonomy, please reach out to your local IT partner.
Our recommendation is to create one PSD for mobile and desktop break points for each key page layout to help communicate and align on any style or layout customization decisions. The CANVAS White Site PSDs should be used as the starting point for any PSD creation and design agencies should layer directly on top of them instead of starting from scratch.
In order to provide the most flexibility for all of our brands’ unique content needs, we have not enabled character restrictions in touts for titles or descriptions. Remember to consider the amount of information you are sharing with the tout size you have selected to ensure the optimal user experience. Touts in a single row will expand to the height of the tout with the most content.
The Consumer Digital Center of Excellence (DCoE) Product Development Team in partnership with the Consumer Digital Product Engineering (DPE) Team leads and executes on the product definition and delivery for the CANVAS platform.
If you would like to request a new feature that is not currently available on CANVAS or on the CANVAS roadmap, or would like to suggest changing the timing of a feature on the CANVAS roadmap, please reach out to your local IT partner to submit a request to the regional backlog.
If you experience a technical issue or would like to report a bug you may have found in the CANVAS platform, please work with your local IT partner to open a ticket in the L1 support queue with the appropriate urgency indicated.
In order to determine the appropriate resources for your CANVAS project, we recommend consulting our CANVAS Project RACI template. Individual site build resources will be determined in coordination with your local IT partner.
